OPEN STACKS | #14 Beyond Bars: Susan Burton, Michaela Soyer & Sharlyn Grace
August 13th, 2017
This week on Open Stacks, we look at issues of incarceration and recidivism. We'll hear from activist Susan Burton, a formerly incarcerated woman who founded a non-profit called A New Way of Life, which helps formerly incarcerated women to get clean, find a job and stay out of prison for good. She will discuss her life and work as portrayed in her new memoir, Becoming Ms. Burton: From Prison to Recovery to Leading the Fight for Incarcerated Women. Also, Michaela Soyer talks about her book A Dream Denied: Recidivism and Young Minority Men in America, and local activist Sharlyn Grace of the Chicago Community Bond Fund talks about the problematic bail bond system and how Chicagoans are working to change it.
