About the Book: Fregean Realism: Frodo Lives! and Other Fictions argues that literary fictions, pictures, and other artworks offer modes of access to an abstract realm of objective thought, about both what is in the real world and what is not, but might, or might not, be. The book shows how a theory of shared meaning does justice to the contextual, ever-changing nature of our objects while making room for durable conceptual content. It applies Frege's insights to problems shared by philosophers, art critics, and historians, such as the truth of art and the reality of beauty and ugliness, but also to specific genres and phenomena like sculpture, allegory, satire, and the first-person view.
About the Author: Andrei Pop was born in Bucharest, studies computer science and art history at Stanford and Harvard, and taught at the Universities of Vienna and Basel before joining the Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago. He has published books on neoclassicism, fin de siècle art, and their relations to philosophy, as well as co-translating and editing Karl Rosenkranz's Aesthetics of Ugliness.
About the Interlocutor: Florian Klinger, professor of Germanic Studies at the University of Chicago, pursues the philosophical study of the arts, literature, music, as well as perhaps still unclassified manifestations of the aesthetic. His book Aesthetic Action asks what specifically we do when we perform aesthetically, and how such performance connects its performers, and relates them to the as political struggle for social justice on one hand, and the struggle for the planetary survival in the Anthropocene on the other.
