About the book: At first glance, the story of Arthur Less is not so bad. He’s a (marginally successful) novelist who gets to travel the world, attending various literary festivals, conferences, and awards ceremonies where he is treated to at least one free meal. But under his trademark blue suit beats a broken heart. Arthur has fled his native San Francisco dreading his fiftieth birthday and his (much younger) former lover’s impending wedding day. He decides the best way to avoid the uncomfortable event is to get the heck out of town, and accept every half-baked literary invitation that’s ever graced his inbox. His travels take him to multiple continents, from the piazzas of Italy to the streets of Paris and the sun-soaked markets of Mexico City. In the end, Less is about how the second half of life can be just as exciting as the first, about the subtle variations of love, and how we are often the biggest obstacle to our own happiness. In Arthur Less, Greer skillfully creates a hero who is impossible not to identify with and root for.

About the author: Andrew Sean Greer is the bestselling author of five works of fiction, including The Confessions of Max Tivoli, which was named a best book of 2004 by the San Francisco Chronicle and the Chicago Tribune. He is the recipient of the Northern California Book Award, the California Book Award, the New York Public Library Young Lions Award, the O Henry award for short fiction and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the New York Public Library. Greer lives in San Francisco. He has traveled to all of the locations in this novel, but he is only big in Italy.
