About the book: Chris, a 12 year old African American boy, moves with his parents from Chicago to Tanzania, Africa to run a safari lodge in the western Serengeti. Once there, Chris meets Khalid, a young Maasai warrior who teaches this very American boy about the land and the animals that make up the region. When an elephant is hunted for its ivory tusks, Chris is drawn into a battle to save the place he now calls home.

About the author: Carolyn Armstrong takes her love of fact-finding and traveling the world to write stories which children relate to as they learn. Her debut, middle-grade novel, Because of Khalid, from Tiger Stripe Publishing, was inspired while on safari in Tanzania, Africa. A lover of all animals (except creepy crawlies and things that sting), Carolyn fosters an elephant named Galla through the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Kenya, because Galla reminded her of Flimsy, the fictional elephant in Because of Khalid.
