About the book: Set off on adventures of epic proportions with a community of children who transform ordinary boxes into colorful costumes, and their ordinary block into a cardboard kingdom. Join sixteen kids on their summer vacation as they encounter knights and rogues, robots and monsters—and their own inner demons—on one last quest before school resumes. The Cardboard Kingdom masterfully employs the use of costumes and make believe to explore gender identity, sexuality, race, bullying, and other sensitive topics in an age-appropriate manner, affirming the power of imagination and play during the most important years of adolescent identity-searching and emotional growth.

About the author: Chad Sell grew up in a small town in central Wisconsin. He lived in a neighborhood much like the Cardboard Kingdom where he and his friends bounded through backyards in imaginative games and outfits! He also drew a lot and came up with all kinds of colorful characters. His favorites were often the villains, because despite being different and misunderstood, they were powerful, confident, and got the best costumes. Chad lives in Chicago with his husband and two cats.

About the author: Katie Schenkel is a Chicago comic writer. In addition to collaborating on The Cardboard Kingdom, she's also written the werewolf comic Moonlighters and the space travel romance 100 Light Years of Solitude. Her past critic work can be found on Comics Alliance, The Mary Sue, Book Riot, and Mis En Scene, among others. Katie cohosts the movie review video series Driving Home the Movie and the podcasts Supergirl Gab and Crystal Clods.
