About the author: From ancient philosophies to wellness movements, scientific discovery to religious observances, fasting plays a surprisingly central role in our societies. It involves doing less but doing less in a radical way. In The Fast: The History, Science, Philosophy, and Promise of Doing Without, John Oakes draws on extensive research and reporting, including interviews with doctors, spiritual leaders, and activists — alongside his own experience of undertaking a week-long fast — to offer a fascinating exploration of fasting throughout history and into our present moment.
