Susan Neiman - "Left is Not Woke" - Dr. Wendy Doniger

Wednesday, March 29, 2023 - 6:00pm - 7:00pm
Event Presenter/Author:
Susan Neiman

Susan Neiman will discuss Left is Not Woke. She will be joined in conversation by Dr. Wendy Doniger.

This event will be held in person at The Seminary Co-op. At this time, masks are required for in-store events.

About the book: If you're woke, you're left. If you're left, you're woke. We blur the terms, assuming that if you're one you must be the other. That, Susan Neiman argues, is a dangerous mistake.

In her new book, Left is Not Woke, Susan Neiman dismantles the idea that wokeness is at heart a progressive movement, arguing that its basic commitments are to tribalism and power. One of the world's leading philosophical voices and a compelling public speaker, Neiman makes this case by examining the influences of Michel Foucault and Carl Schmitt, whose ideas continue to mislead progressives in the twenty-first century.

About the author: Susan Neiman is an American philosopher, historian, and writer. She is the director of the Einstein Forum in Berlin and the author of the critically acclaimed Learning from the Germans: Race and the Memory of Evil, among other important titles translated into many languages. Her new book, Left is Not Woke, will be published by Polity Books in March 2023.

About the interlocutor: Dr. Wendy Doniger is the Mircea Eliade Distinguished Service Professor of the History of Religions at the University of Chicago, Emerita.  She is the author of over forty books, including An American Girl in India: Letters and Recollections, 1963-64 and After the War: The Last Books of the Mahabharata
